Citing a growing interest in the local food movement among Texans, Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples encouraged diners Friday to support Texas farmers and ranchers by eating at restaurants participating in the upcoming GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up, presented by Farm Credit, July 23-29. The Round-Up is the only week-long, statewide dine-out event in Texas showcasing restaurants that serve locally produced food and beverages.
TSCRA Director Jay Evans, Austin, left, talked to Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples at a GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up kickoff event on Friday.
“The local food movement is more than just a fad as more people than ever want to know where their food comes from,” Staples said. “The GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up brings together the best offerings of Texas farmers, ranchers, seafood producers, breweries, winemakers and chefs as they showcase local food. By dining out, consumers give back to our economy and help contribute to area food banks.”
Along with supporting Texas farmers and ranchers, the GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up helps feed hungry Texans. This year, participating Round-Up restaurants have pledged to donate about $40,000 to local food banks to help provide more than 100,000 meals for hungry Texans.
“The Texas Food Bank Network is grateful for the support provided for our food banks by restaurants participating in the GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up,” said Celia Cole, CEO of the Texas Food Bank Network. “Our food banks distributed enough food last year to provide over 2.3 million meals and serve over 3 million needy Texans, including more than 1 million children. It’s support from local businesses like the GO TEXAN restaurants that helps our food banks nourish hungry families in every community across Texas.”
Farm Credit Bank of Texas has generously sponsored the statewide dine-out event since its inception five years ago.
“The GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up is a great way to highlight the connection between the agriculture industry and the consumer,” Stan Ray said on behalf of Farm Credit Bank of Texas. “As a lender to the agriculture industry, we’re proud to be part of an event that supports the hardworking farmers and ranchers we serve, while supporting local economies and food banks throughout the state.”
Round-Up restaurants across Texas will highlight special meal options made with ingredients such as beef, poultry, pork, seafood and produce grown and raised in Texas.
“We are surrounded by great farmers and ranchers who provide us with some of the best tasting ingredients for our meals,” said Jack Gilmore, chef/owner of Jack Allen’s Kitchen in Austin. “To me, using these locally-grown and raised foods is the natural thing to do. We appreciate Commissioner Staples for creating this week to highlight restaurants like mine, Jack Allen’s, that take pride in using Texas ingredients.”
